CardioidAudio-Technica AT4031

Cardioid Pencil Condenser Microphone

The AT4031 was an electret pencil condenser microphone with a fixed Cardioid pickup pattern. The mic was discontinued by Audio-Technica, and replaced in the product lineup by the AT4041.

How do the AT4041 and AT4031 differ?

  • The AT4041 has much higher sensitivity: 15.8mV/Pa.
  • The AT4041 has lower impedance (100 Ohms).
  • The AT4041 has a smoother frequency response; the AT4031 drops 1–2dB below 1kHz.

Both the AT4031 and AT4041 are fixed-cardioid electret condensers, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 70dB — meaning, a self-noise measure of 24dBA (assuming the SNR is A-weighted).

A recessed switch on the mic body provides a high-pass filter, which engages a 12dB/octave cut below 80Hz.

The mic’s body is made from turned brass, finished in black chrome.

Given its relatively low sensitivity, the AT4031 is likely better suited to close-miked loud sources such as snare drums. Conversely, the AT4031 would unlikely be satisfying on quiet acoustic instruments or distant ensembles, due to its self-noise and sensitivity.

Note: the photo on this profile is of the AT4041, which is similar but not identical. We have not found any usable photos of the AT4031 (but would welcome a contribution from the community).

The AT4031 shipped with a foam windscreen, a mic clip, and a padded carrying case.

The Audio-Technica AT4031 is also known as: 4031.
