AKG Acoustics C 2000 B
Cardioid Condenser Microphone
The C2000B is a fixed-cardioid electret condenser mic with a roughly half-inch diameter capsule.
Aspects of the mic’s capsule design are covered by patent 6,510,231, “Electroacoustic transducer.”
Patent 6,510,231
An electroacoustic transducer based on the capacitor principle [that] includes an essentially rigid electrode [“backplate”; #8] and a flexible electrode [#7] constructed as a diaphragm. In the central areas of the electrodes the distance between the diaphragm and the rigid electrode is smaller than in the edge areas thereof. The transducer may include a resonator attachment [#4]. The diaphragm is deformed into a cone shape or truncated cone shape. The rigid electrode has in the central area thereof an at least essentially circular-cylindrical projection [#9], wherein the diaphragm rests against this projection, for example by a nipple [#3] attached to the resonator attachment.
By pinning the center of the diaphragm to an uncharged, raised central area on the backplate, the voltage of the circuit can be increased without risking that the diaphragm “sticks” to the backplate. This has the beneficial effect of increasing the mic’s sensitivity.
Pushing the diaphragm into a “truncated cone” shape, in which the central part is closer to the backplate than the perimeter, is said to increase the capsule’s low-frequency response — although the published response shows the mic at -6dB @ 50Hz, a response easily bested by the MK-012.
Electronic Musician, 2001
The C 2000 Bs performed well as overheads on a drum set, offering good definition, but not as much presence in the highs as captured by the C 3000 B and the C 414 — a somewhat surprising result considering that small-diaphragm mics typically excel in high-end response. In addition, it accentuated the mids around 600 to 700 Hz, making the hi-hat cymbals sound a bit clangy and tanky. The snare drum sounded thicker and beefier than it did in the room, though not unappealing.
MIX, 2000
On vocals and acoustic guitar, the 2000B is a solid performer. With the mic positioned six to eight inches from the vocalist (and about half that distance for the guitar) with the -10dB on, the mic produced a warm, clear, uncluttered sound with a slight midrange boost.
The AKG Acoustics C 2000 B is also known as: C2000B, C2000, C 2000 B.
