Milab DC-96C Giveaway

Milab DC-96C MicrophoneThis month’s microphone giveaway is sponsored by my friends at Milab Microphones. They have donated one of their newest condenser mics, the DC-96C! It’s a premium large-diaphragm microphone with a sticker price of $1750. (And from what I’ve heard, it’s worth every penny.)

Update 2011-10-01: Congratulations to our winner, Jacob Silver of New York City!

You’ll soon find more about Jacob on the Winners’ Gallery page.

The Prize

The DC-96C is one of the most unique large-diaphragm condensers on the market.

The capsule measures 36x19mm; the rectangular shape is said to combine the great transient response of small-diaphragm capsules with the low noise of large-diaphragm capsules. It also delivers two different polar patterns: the mic’s pickup is wider side-to-side than top-to-bottom. This puts an additional tool in the engineer’s toolbox: the ability to rotate the mic to best capture the source at hand.

For a large-diaphragm mic, the DC-96C is tiny: under 6'' in length and just about 1 inch in diameter.

Its high sensitivity (21.5 mV/Pa) and low self-noise (12dBA) make it well-suited to quiet acoustic sources, yet its max SPL of 144dB (with pad engaged) means it will stand up to loud sources too.

These mics sound great on guitars, drums, and vocals.

Mike Jasper, Tape Op

Milab’s new mic is a winner. The DC-96C sparkles with clarity on the high end, yet retains the low-end warmth of the DC-96B. Two DC-96Cs would give you everything you need to capture a brilliant acoustic guitar sound, as well as drum overheads, background vocals, any live instrument from horns to mandolin, and sensitive sources such as choirs and symphonic orchestras.

How sweet having a whole set of these might be in the locker…, but unfortunately this is not likely to happen (at this point in time) – I would have to start out with a first one!

I own some Milabs, three VIP-50’s and a pair of their DC-196 (which you should review!)

The DC-96-C is a total winner.

I will make some room in my mic locker in anticipation of a SIXTH Milab.

I love their products and tell everyone I know about them.
