Welcome to Year 2

Thursday, February 19th, 2009 | by

One year ago today, I spent a frantic evening disproving my long-held theory that the RecordingHacks mic database was at least six months away from launch. Happy Anniversary to me!

The site was ugly. The mic database was small and skewed heavily toward a couple major manufacturers. The “to do” list was a whole lot longer than the “have done” list.

Well, there’s still a lot left to do, but it’s been a good year. Here’s a picture of the site’s traffic to date:

The growth has been a blast. But more importantly, this project has given me an opportunity to meet some truly inspiring, smart, and passionate people — musicians, engineers, producers, writers, designers, each an artist in his or her own way. Getting to know them makes this endeavor worth all the late nights.

Enough with the past… what’s in store for the second year?

More microphones, to start. Way more microphones. Vendors are coming to me to find out how to get their mics listed. It’s only a short hop from there to having them do some of the data entry.

We’ll have more gear reviews, too; in fact, March is shaping up to be a sort of “microphone madness” month. I’ll be testing a couple new K67-style mics (details forthcoming) against a pair of mint-condition, Klaus Heyne-modded, vintage Neumann M269s. I’m no David, but hello, Goliath!

Also I’ll have a parade of LDCs lined up for a couple vocal tests, including VO.

And I’m not sure I can have any number of mics around for too long before I start thinking about the next drum overhead mic shootout.

There’s a comparison of the Digi 002, before and after the Black Lion Audio “signature” mod, in the works too.

I will add more writers for the blog this year. If you have something to say, get in touch. Musicians, home recordists, studio owners, engineers, mic designers: this means you! Guest-bloggers are welcome.

More features! The mic database just keeps getting better. Starting tomorrow, in fact. Come back then to see me plug one the most glaring holes in the mic database. With style. 🙂

There are a couple surprises in the works, too. Stick around; it just gets better!

Congratulations on your first year. I stumbled on to your site last summer and put it in my favorites list. The site has grown nicely and it’s been fun to read about what others think about some of the mics that I know, and also about many of the mics that I’m not familar with. Good luck with year two!
