shooting microphones

Tom mic shootoutAfter weeks of planning and, honestly, acquisitions, we’re getting ready for a couple drum kit microphone shootouts…

First up, on toms we have an Audix D2, an ElectroVoice N/D468, and a CAD M179. We may throw an Audix D4 in there too if we can scrounge up a couple more stands.

Next up, we’ll take a listen to some overhead options — our favorite and standby, the Oktavamod MK-012, the STO-2 omnis that did so well on the dulcimer recently, and the M179s, which frankly seem a bit overpowered for toms. For those keeping score, that’s an SDC cardioid pair, a 6mm omni pair, and a dual-diaphragm LDC pair… very different styles, and hopefully, very different sounds.

After that, we’ll try out some snare mics: the SM57, of course, an Audix D1, Beyerdynamic M422, maybe an EV 635a, maybe an MK-012 hypercardioid, maybe an N/D468, maybe even my MK-219 if I have any inputs left.

And after that I’m going to be chased from the studio by family members with sticks. Stay tuned!
